Problems with external display resolution

finally have issue can't seem figure out myself. after long time of reading mr, seems fitting place try help. i've searched many placed , have yet find solution. posted on apple support forum few days ago, no response.

have 21" gateway display old pc collecting dust after got '11 macbook pro 13", i've decided use external display. issue display's native resolution 1680 x 1050, not able use other res setting other 800 x 600, wich makes huge. also, 1680 x 1050 not listed under res options when have display settings , other resolution choose results in external going dark. come on when returned 800 x 600. doing through vga , extended desktop, not mirroring or else. maybe adapter faulty? i'm pretty not vga cable because able hd pc.

let me know if other info needed. thanks!

 

what model external monitor? should visible on backside of it.

have tried mirror displays yet?

system preferences > displays >> arrangement >>> mirror displays (but know, display lowest resolution determines maximum resolution used on both, 1 display have lower native resolution, except when both displays have same native resolution)
