okay fellas, i've gone ocd in researching how "clean up" setup i've ordered thunderbolt display. have ton of questions, break questions smaller parts isn't mammoth amount of reading.
background
i'm dj first , foremost using either serato scratch live or itch. in regard, i'd i'm in pro-level category. secondary djing music production (ableton), short film/videography, , photography (this being more of "i take pictures , organize them... very light post-work if any). last 3 items hobbies (especially last one).
hardware have
2011 mbp 15"
firewire audio interface (m-audio 1814 care)
mpd32 drum pad
studiologic keyboard
thunderbolt display (on order)
2 external usb drives (both near 80% capacity)
what i'm trying do
a- clean desk
mbp primary workstation computer related (djing, production, email, internet surfing, etc). of stuff have, "dock" mbp requires bunch of wires plugged in , lot of dangling wires.
news think i've solved issue (along more real-estate issues) going tbd.
b - clean mbp
mbp laptop take me gigs. having secondary laptop not option me right now. therefore, it's in best interest cleanup mbp , start setting workflows utilize external storage. please correct me if i'm wrong, files should sit on mbps internal drive music use gig, , of course applications (word docs , small video clips too).
need forum's on hardware solutions.
c - maximize workflows
part of effort b, realize hardware solution makes sense if workflows sound. please correct me if i'm wrong, i'm going ask , detail part out last. if guys think first part needs addressed... let me know.
okay, said... here's first question:
q1 - storage solution
- need move ableton's library off internal drive. never work on music away home mini-studio.
- need move photo library (40gb) off internal also. don't in photography realm other shoot, save, , organize (and sync pics iphone4).
- of short film/videography work done off internal drive well, should considered want move off internal well
- if recommended solution buy external drive, transfer contents of current 750gb external , use time machine backup. if else, lets consider need way backup things using time machine.
- i'd ideally solution seamless in sense don't have if mbp recognize additional storage once docked tbd.
knowing have tbd on way, guys recommend economical solution? thunderbolt solutions worth right throughput need (right i'm thinking no). if so, should stick usb2.0 or build gige nas? i'm assuming wireless solutions out of question, hey might wrong.
then... go raid 0? 1? 5?

why not fw800 drive?
daisy chain 1814. or swap out 1814 unit. description doesn't seem need many inputs/ outputs. have similar setup doing production ableton , use fast track pro 4/4 , more enough. usb no latency issues. should able come out on top if sold off too.
use fw , 3 usb ports on display , good. fw800 systems 7200 rpm drives norm in audio world , fine photography , small amount of video work too.
think that's how go streamlining setup. way plugged display , nothing laptop.
