not sure if it's fan failure or what. bought 4870 while pre-flashed. worked great in 1,1 mp , boxed after got 6870. 4870 has been boxed 6 months. got mp 2010 hexcore week or 2 ago , installed 4870 run 3rd monitor (long story).
card showed desktop background, external psu running great, happy. watched tv on video card hour, , went play 4870 (working fine whole time). moved itunes on 4870 monitor , re-sized window... re-sized it, heard noises vibrating sounds coming case (presumably card)!! stopped moving mouse, noise stopped, moved again, noise returned. weirdest thing ever. 10 seconds weirdness, screen goes black , says "resolution outside of scan area" or something--basically thing went kaput.
restarted , screen turned on, after booting , showing desktop background, overheated again.
popped open case @ point , card hot touch! i'm not sure either fan has stopped or there's short somewhere must have happened while card in storage.
there firmware issue new mac causes fan not work? change i'm using smc fan control (default settings)?
edit: fan spinning, not fast 5870 is... wonder if broke fan in storage.
edit 2: noticed video doesn't come until login.. normal?
the smc not control gpu fan speed.
if it's not spinning flashed bios has it's fan speed settings wrong.
reflash more suitable fan speeds...
