Why the hell did Apple cripple the USB port on the 1st generation ATV?

i know 1st generation old news, if bring criticism of royally pissed me off, "what see get" approach took storage. considering options 40gb , later 160gb, you'd have thought providing usb port "service & diagnostics" backward of them. mean, if idea of streaming (which latter generations evident), why bother providing first 1 internal storage begin with? matter why bother putting usb port on @ all... it's if intended have more functionality deliberately crippled god known reason...
