the problem: tuxera's ntfs drivers (used write ntfs volumes os x) seems causing loginwindow process crash on mac (running 10.5.8.)
both times happened after i'd copied 10gb worth of files ntfs drive.
first time, couldn't eject drive (no error messages), couldn't quit applications, couldn't logout or shutdown. unplugged driver (i had activity monitor opened , saw loginwindow wasn't responding), got kernel panic.
next time happened still open applications, couldn't eject drive or log out. tried force quit loginwindow, after few seconds logged me out, seemed stuck in loop of blank light blue screen 1 of circular ring status bar things, , couple of small squares of desktop background in top right corner. held power button shut computer off.
running 10.5.8 on power mac g5 updates installed, latest firmware, , latest version of tuxera's ntfs drivers.

i have same problem tuxera ntfs mac 2012.3 under leopard 10.5.8.
got blue screen whenever tried logout. (ie login window not appear). drove me nuts!!
tried trashing com.apple.loginwindow.plist in library/preferences did not fix it. tried repairing disk etc applejack. mo luck..
got bad not log in.
had boot safe mode (by holding down shift key @ boot time after chime). uninstalled tuxera ntfs.
trashed com.apple.loginwindow.plist in library/preferences.
rebooted. login screen works again.
looks bug tuxera ntfs.
think bug started 2011.4 version. problem still exists in latest 2012.3 version.
filed bug report tuxera.
