Matched pairs with RAM?

i'm confused how works. know types of ram work better if matched pairs. have imac, core2duo, 21.5" has stock 4gb (2 x 2gb) in it. thinking of buying 8gb of ram (2 x 4gb sticks) take 12gb overall. work since there'd 2 sets of matching pairs or not getting full benefit of ram boost?
