hey, seem have messed headphone jack in mba although have absolutely no idea how messed or did. not think have subjected part of mba safe treatment.
symptoms: can hear audio 1 earphone (the right side) while left earphone dead. tweaking balance settings in system preferences has revealed (in uninformed opinion) hardware problem: 1. if balance bar in middle, hear audio through right earphone only. 2. if balance bar extreme right, hear audio through right earphone only. 3. if balance bar extreme left, hear absolutely nothing.
have idea (other take apple store obviously).

ps: before ask me, no, problem not headphones because have tested numerous headphones. headphones tested show problem mba normal other devices.
only time i've had problem when i've failed push headphone plug way in. leaves last band on plug being seated.
if haven't tried this, ensure have these pushed in way. try pair if have them verify if issue happening both sets, or one. tweaked plug when in port , pushed bands out of way inside port. plug them separate jack , pull them out , see if can reproduce issue on device. luck!
edit - ignore suggestion on trying other headphones.
